Entries to the 2023 Glacier Storms River Traverse are open, just in time for Christmas. Dryland Event Management’s most social stage race is always a highlight of the year and next year’s event could even be a present to yourself and/or a loved one, if you act now. Though the event is scheduled to take place from 11 to 13 August, entries opened on 13 December 2022, to accommodate those searching for the perfect Yuletide gift.
The three-day stage race features a famously festive spirit. The riding is not too strenuous, especially for the many who take on the race with eBikes. Each stage is around 50 kilometres in length, providing a balance of fun on the trails with easy-enough riding to ensure everyone has a reserve of energy for fun in the race village later. Though for the racers, the prospect of going faster always increases the difficulty and will certainly get the blood pumping, particularly if they choose to mix it up against the riders in the new Youth Category.
“The Glacier Storms River Traverse really is an event we at Dryland look forward to every year,” Henco Rademeyer of Dryland Event Management said. “It’s such great fun, from the riding which is social rather than fiercely competitive to the gatherings in the bar, which have become rather competitive, especially if there is rugby on.”
“Tsitsikamma is the perfect venue for a relaxed stage race. Storms River Village is one of those places that simply calms you down as you arrive and the hospitality of the Tsitsikamma Village Inn ensures everyone is superbly looked after throughout the long weekend,” Rademeyer continued. “Glacier by Sanlam go out of their way to host a dynamic event. With the riders being treated like kings and queens throughout. It really is a spectacular three days, which you can spend in a quiet and beautiful corner of South Africa, with likeminded people.”
To encourage younger riders to take up mountain bike stage racing, Dryland has introduced a Youth Category to the Glacier Storms River Traverse. Young men and women, between the ages of 15 and 23 qualify for the category. They can enter as teams or as solo riders and will benefit from a 25% discount on the standard entry fee.
For eBikers the event remains one to do. The short routes mean battery management is straightforward, particularly for those who ride conservatively and chat to their fellow riders rather than race through the field. “Ideally, we’d like the eBike riders to slow down and soak up the scenery along the route,” Rademeyer added. “Come along and ride rather than race. Actually, that goes for everyone – if you really want to enjoy the event, ride it rather than race it. If you are competitive though, go full gas! There are prizes for the podium finishers, including the eBike Category.”
Entries to the Glacier Storms River Traverse are limited to 300 riders. Each entrant will receive lunch and dinner each day, access to the Rider Chill Zone area with complimentary snacks between meals, a First Ascent event garment and a Biogen goodie bag. Accommodation is, however, not included with the entry fees and the options in Storms River Village fill up fast. In fact, the Tsitsikamma Village Inn is often partially booked out before the race entries even open.
